In 1988 the Kings rocked the hockey world to its core when they acquired the greatest player in the sport, Wayne Gretzky, from the Edmonton Oilers. It's widely regarded to be the biggest trade in sports history. [link] Gretzky was never able to help the Kings win the cup however, coming closest in 1993 when the Kings lost in the finals to the Montreal Canadiens. Now, 19 years later, the Kings are making another run for the cup, and this time they may just pull it off.
Bailey, the Kings mascot [link] , first showed up on the scene in 2007. He's usually found all over the stadium during Kings home games, mocking other teams [link] & the visiting fans [link] , and beating his drum to start up chants [link] . Most mascots wear "00" as their number, but Bailey wears 72 to remind people that's the average temperature in LA, presumably to rub it in if you happen to be watching from someplace like Chicago or Winnipeg.
Bailey holds a lot of significance to the team as he was named in honor of Kings' Director of Scouting Garnet 'Ace' Bailey, an ex-NHLer and winner of 2 Stanley Cups during his playing career. Ace (along with another Kings scout, Mark Bavis) was killed [link] on September 11 when the plane he was a passenger on was crashed into the World Trade Center.
